Our Name
Miccolachee: Pronounced as ‘Mick-Oh-Latch-ee’
Our name is meant to honor the Native American tribes that called Tallahassee, Florida home, and where now, our company calls home.
The Apalachee were a highly organized, agricultural Native American tribe who lived in the Florida Panhandle, especially around present-day Tallahassee, long before European contact. Known for their mound-building, trade networks, and fierce warriors, they played a major role in early Spanish colonial history before being nearly destroyed in the early 1700s.
The Miccosukee people, originally part of the Lower Creek Confederacy, migrated into the Tallahassee region in the 1700s as they moved southward to escape colonial pressure. They established villages in the area before continuing into South Florida in the 1800’s, leaving a lasting influence on the Native history of the Tallahassee region.
